An engineering company’s website should let buyers establish technical fit before they request a meeting or send a drawing. They need to understand the disciplines you cover, the work you take responsibility for, the evidence behind your capabilities and the information required for an initial assessment. “Engineering solutions” alone gives them very little to evaluate.

The structure must reflect the firm. A controls integrator, mechanical design consultancy and precision engineering workshop answer different buying questions. The useful common principle is to connect each capability to a deliverable, its limits and verifiable evidence, then provide a suitable enquiry route.

Explain the engineering responsibility you actually accept

Start with the distinction between designing, analysing, manufacturing, installing, commissioning and maintaining. A buyer should not have to infer your role from project photographs. If you provide design support but do not manufacture, say so. If specialist testing is subcontracted, distinguish that from facilities you operate yourself.

A mechanical design page might describe the assemblies considered, the inputs required and the drawings or models delivered. A controls page might explain the systems addressed, commissioning responsibilities and interfaces with existing equipment. A civil or structural consultancy would need its own account of project stages, deliverables and professional responsibilities. Do not copy the vocabulary of a machine shop into every engineering discipline.

Use industry pages only where the sector changes the work or evidence. A food-production buyer may have different operational constraints from a building-services buyer. Explain the relevant requirements your team can address, without claiming approvals or experience that the business cannot substantiate.

Build a capability page around a buyer’s decision

A useful page answers four questions in sequence: what can you undertake, under which conditions, what will the customer receive, and what proves the claim? This gives the commercial team a reference it can send before an initial discussion.

Specific limits are helpful. For manufacturing work, publish dimensions, materials or tolerances only where the technical team can support them, with the relevant conditions. A machine’s maximum travel is not proof that every component within that envelope can be produced to every tolerance. For consultancy, describe the agreed outputs and review process rather than implying unlimited responsibility.

Facilities and equipment should explain capability, not become an unqualified inventory. Identify what the equipment enables, whether it is in-house and how it relates to inspection or delivery. If photographs show a partner’s facility, label the relationship accurately.

The existing manufacturing buyer checklist is useful for production businesses. Engineering services need the additional distinction between technical responsibility, project coordination and physical supply.

An example information architecture

This illustrative structure suits a multidisciplinary engineering SME. It is a planning model, not a claim about a Smartcon Works client. Smaller firms can combine sections where the information remains easy to find.

Keep navigation labels understandable outside your organisation. “Capabilities” can work if its next level names actual services. Internal division names often need explanation. On mobile, the visitor should be able to move from a capability to its supporting project and enquiry route without repeatedly returning to the homepage.

Make quality evidence precise enough to verify

For each credential, confirm the holder, issuing body, current status and scope. Link to a current certificate or verification route where appropriate. A certification held by one legal entity or facility should not silently become a claim for every group company or activity.

The government’s accreditation guidance explains how accreditation establishes the competence of bodies carrying out activities such as testing, inspection and certification. Holding management-system certification is different from being an accredited testing laboratory. Use the wording supported by the actual evidence rather than treating all quality marks as interchangeable.

Explain the quality process in terms a buyer can use: drawing revision control, inspection stages, traceability or approval before release, where those processes genuinely exist. Avoid publishing sensitive procedures simply to make the page longer. State what evidence can be supplied during procurement and who handles the request.

Project evidence should reveal judgement

A strong engineering project account starts with a requirement and a constraint. It explains the firm’s own contribution, the deliverables and the evidence available for the result. A large customer name without a defined role is weaker than a smaller, well-explained piece of work.

Where confidentiality prevents naming the customer, describe only what is permitted and make the limitation clear. Do not turn confidential work into a fictional case study. Drawings, process photographs and diagrams can be valuable when approved; remove information that should not be public.

Separate project history from current capacity. Completing a particular job does not mean the same team, production slot or specification is available immediately. Invite a review of the new requirement. For fabrication businesses, our steel fabrication and metalwork guide gives a more specialised approach to presenting production capability.

Design the RFQ around an initial assessment

Ask for contact details, the required service, a short description and relevant timing. Then make additional fields depend on the work: quantities and material for production; existing systems and desired outputs for integration; project stage and available information for consultancy.

Do not require a finished specification from someone who is asking for help developing one. Equally, distinguish a budget enquiry from a manufacturing-ready request. State whether drawings can be supplied initially or whether the team will provide an agreed transfer route after contact or an NDA discussion.

If uploads are included, specify accepted files, limits, storage, access and retention with the implementer. Test failure messages and successful receipt. The W3C forms tutorial provides practical guidance on labels, instructions and feedback. The form should remain understandable on a phone and without a mouse.

Run a buyer evaluation before launch

  • Can a technical reviewer identify the relevant capability and its limits?
  • Can procurement establish the legal supplier, location and credential scope?
  • Can a project manager see the deliverables and responsibilities?
  • Can someone find a current technical document without guessing its filename?
  • Can a mobile visitor send an initial requirement and receive a clear acknowledgement?
  • Can the receiving colleague decide who should respond, using the information supplied?

Give each failed question an owner before adding more pages. For a budget built around those tasks, use our B2B website budgeting worksheet. The first useful deliverable is a site that helps the right buyer assess the right work.
